A Hollywood portrait is a chance to step into a different kind of light. Shaped shadows, expressive posing and carefully chosen clothing create a black-and-white photograph with the atmosphere of classic cinema—and a character that is entirely your own.
At my studio in Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, I create Hollywood-inspired portraits around the person in front of the camera. You don’t need modelling experience or a vintage wardrobe. Here’s how we plan your session, what to bring and what happens on the day.
What makes a portrait feel like classic Hollywood?
For me, it begins with light. The direction and shape of the light draw attention to the eyes, define the face and let other parts of the photograph fall into shadow. In black and white, expression, texture and the lines of clothing become especially important.
The result can be quietly elegant or more theatrical. We can take inspiration from classic cinema without copying a particular actor or asking you to play someone else.
Who is a Hollywood portrait session for?
You don’t have to be an actor or model. A session can be a way to mark a milestone, create a personal portrait or simply enjoy being photographed in a style you love. Some people arrive with a clear idea; others want to explore what suits them.
If you need a straightforward photograph for LinkedIn or a company profile, an individual headshot session may be a better fit. You can also read my guide to the difference between headshots and portraits.
Before your session: finding your direction
We start with a planning conversation about the mood and looks you are drawn to. Tell me what you like in the portraits on the Hollywood Portraits page, or bring a few visual references. I’ll help you think through clothing and accessories so we have a direction before you arrive.
What should you bring?
Bring two or three outfits, pressed and on hangers, along with your own accessories. Well-fitting clothes, different necklines and interesting textures give us options. Simple pieces often work beautifully; prominent logos and busy patterns can pull attention away from your face.
A favourite hat, jacket or piece of jewellery can add character. Vintage clothing is welcome if you enjoy it, but it isn’t a requirement. The photographs can feel timeless with a contemporary wardrobe.
Hair and makeup
Please arrive with your hair and makeup ready. You are welcome to arrange a professional stylist beforehand, but it isn’t essential. Hair and makeup services are not provided or included. We’ll discuss your preferred look during the planning conversation.
What happens in the studio?
Your session allows up to two hours in my Rickmansworth studio, with time to explore different looks and lighting. I’ll guide your position, expression and where to look, making adjustments as we go. You don’t need to arrive knowing how to pose.
There is room for both a relaxed expression and something more dramatic. We’ll work towards portraits that feel considered and personal, rather than expecting every photograph to have the same mood.
Choosing your finished portraits
After the session, you choose your favourites from a proof gallery. Three individually retouched portraits are included, supplied as high-resolution digital files suitable for printing, plus copies sized for online sharing.
Finished portraits are typically delivered within 2–3 days of your final image selection. Additional retouched images are £45 each. Prints are available separately; ask about the options when we plan your session.
How much does a Hollywood portrait session cost?
The session is £395, including the planning conversation, up to two hours in the studio and three retouched portraits. A £95 deposit secures your session, with the £300 balance payable on the day. Additional images are paid for when selected.
